Water and the Mayan cenotes: An Initiatory Journey to the Heart of Yucatan's Traditions

INNER GLIMPSES / MEXICO

L'eau et les cenotes mayas : voyage initiatique au cœur des traditions du Yucatan

Water is a vital element. But it is even more vital in a region with no rivers, due to its geology. On the other hand, there are formations unique in the world called “cenotes”, which take the form of immense wells or caves filled with limpid water. The Mayans therefore developed a very special relationship with water and these places.

Accompanied by a scientist open to spiritual questions and a shaman, we propose an initiatory program that will help you rediscover water in all its aspects.

If 55 to 65% of our bodies are made up of water, you’ll want to know more about this fundamental element, too!

A trip made for adventurers! EXPLORA means the 1st edition of this trip, and therefore a lower-than-usual rate in exchange for your flexibility. Make the most of it!

Program details day by day

We have chosen to break with the usual travel consumer habits by not sharing the day-by-day program with you, but rather a description of what awaits you, because we believe more in establishing a relationship of trust, from human to human. However, this detail may be communicated to you at a later date.

The Yucatan is home to several thousand cenotes (inherited from the Mayan term dzonot). The karstic relief of this peninsula was forged by the fall of a meteorite (the Chicxulub episode) some 66 million years ago. Thanks to the erosion that followed through galleries and caves, the water rushed in from all sides, without ever being able to define a continuous course.

The Maya civilization, of which we will see several emblematic sites, flourished here, only to die out in a manner that remains a mystery to this day.

The dependence on this infiltrated water means that the descendants of the ancient Maya are still very attached to certain propitiatory rituals. The cenotes are considered to be protected by spirits called “aluxes”, and approaching them requires their prior authorization.

We’ll take a journey to discover several of these cenotes, from the well-known to the more confidential, thanks to the accompaniment of a Mexican researcher specializing in these environments, as well as a Mayan healer who will share his spiritual perception with us. We’ll take part in a number of traditional ceremonies, with moments of meditation, to compare two complementary approaches.
